MIA Museum of Islamic Art takes ‘Atlas Masterpieces’ outdoors

The Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) is taking its popular exhibition ‘Atlas Splendour: A Journey Through the Heritage of Morocco’ outside its walls in the heart of Doha with the ‘Atlas Splendour: Beyond the Museum’ initiative. Part of the Qatar-Morocco 2024 Year of Culture programme, the initiative introduces the arts and traditions of Morocco to the public through outdoor installations and live performances throughout Old Doha Port (ODP), Msheireb Downtown Doha (MDD) and the MIA Park.

Featuring some 200 rare and never-before-seen artefacts, ‘Atlas Splendour’ highlights Morocco’s culture and heritage across five themed sections, from its diverse landscapes to its dynastic history, to its exquisite craftsmanship and musical heritage.

Visitors to the Old Doha Port will find an installation of Moroccan carpets draped over the colourful building, evoking the vibrant souks and mountainous landscapes of the Atlas region. Performers will also roam the streets displaying larger-than-life versions of the exhibition’s key pieces, bringing Moroccan cultural heritage to life in unique and engaging ways.

Public events schedule: February 15: Launch of the ‘Outside the Museum Walls’ initiative at the ODP with an installation of carpets and large-scale copies of some of the exhibits.

February 22: The moving events featuring large-scale pieces continue at MDD.

February 28: Activities conclude at the MIA Park, while carpet installations continue at the ODP until the exhibition closes on March 8.

Visitors can interact with the installations, take photos and scan QR codes to move from public events to the full-length “Atlas Masterpieces” exhibition on display at the MIA. To ensure maximum community participation, MIA has launched a “Find It and Win It” challenge on social media. Participants who locate the items on display at the event, take a photo of them, and share it on social media, tagging MIA, will have the chance to win a gift voucher from In-Q Store worth QR1,000.
