Modern Art Center Tetouan

A Celebration of Creativity and Artistic Heritage

Explore the vibrant world of Moroccan modern and contemporary art at the Modern Art Center Tetouan, a dynamic cultural hub that brings the city’s rich visual arts history to life. Housed in a historic building that once served as Tetouan’s railway station (1918), the centre was transformed in the early 21st century into a cutting-edge cultural complex, officially opening its doors in 2013.

A Historic Building with a Modern Mission

The building itself is an architectural gem, designed in the “New Arab” style by architect Julio Rodriguez Roda. Its transformation into an art centre preserves the structure’s historic charm while providing a modern space for creativity and cultural exchange. The centre symbolises the shared artistic memory between Morocco and Spain, reflecting Tetouan’s long-standing role as a crossroads of artistic inspiration.

A Journey Through Generations of Art

The centre features four permanent exhibition rooms, tracing three generations of artists who shaped the history of visual arts in northern Morocco. The main gallery honours the first generation, led by Mariano Bertucci, founder of Morocco’s first school of fine arts. Through paintings and sculptures, visitors can trace the evolution of Moroccan artistic expression, from early modern works to contemporary creations.

In addition to permanent displays, the centre hosts temporary exhibitions and performance spaces, including a second underground pavilion added in 2017, offering a platform for experimental and emerging artistic projects.

Art That Tells the Story of Tetouan

The collection includes over 200 paintings and 19 sculptures, reflecting Tetouan’s long-standing role as a hub for artists. Over the decades, the city has attracted creatives inspired by its beauty, culture, and artistic community, making it an enduring centre of Moroccan visual arts.

Visitors can experience the plastic history of Tetouan through an immersive visual journey, discovering how the city’s landscapes, traditions, and spirit have inspired generations of artists.
