Located on Rue Sefaha, this historic tannery has been in continuous operation since the 16th century, making it both a cultural landmark and a window into centuries old craftsmanship.
A Historic Industrial and Artisanal Hub
Dar Dbagh sits at the heart of Tetouan’s old industrial district, now transformed into a lively artisanal and tourist area. It is surrounded by workshops of shoemakers, painters, herbalists, goldsmiths, and tailors, reflecting the city’s rich history of craft and trade. Its architecture and layout, including two entrances one facing the street of shoemakers and the other the cemetery are a testament to Tetouan’s historic urban planning and water network, designed specifically for leather processing.
The Art of Leather
The tannery features 160 stone basins where leather is washed, tanned, softened, and dyed using traditional techniques passed down for generations. Visitors can observe skilled artisans at work, following each step of the process from raw hide to beautifully finished leather products.
Inside, a wooden bridge allows visitors to view the entire operation while also offering a glimpse of the surrounding old medina, including the Muslim and Jewish cemeteries, linking the city’s industrial and cultural history in a single panorama.
