From Tamouda to the Roman and Islamic Eras

Tetouan was once known as Tamouda, an ancient settlement founded around the 3rd century B.C. In 42 A.D., Roman forces destroyed the city during a revolt and built a fortified military camp in its place—remains of which can still be seen today.

The museum’s collections reflect this long and diverse history, displaying artifacts from prehistoric, Punic, Mauritanian, Roman, and early Islamic periods, offering insight into daily life, trade, beliefs, and artistic expression across centuries.

Remarkable Archaeological Collections

Visitors can explore a wide variety of archaeological treasures, including ceramics, amphoras, mosaics, inscriptions, coins, jewellery, tools, and architectural fragments made from stone, bronze, and marble. These objects were uncovered through systematic excavations carried out in northern Morocco since the early 20th century.

Many of the artifacts come from important sites such as Lixus, Tamouda, Oued Martil, Amsoura, and Kaf Taht L’ghar, highlighting the region’s historical importance in the Mediterranean world.
