Discover Taourirt Kasbah: A Window into Morocco’s Royal Past
In the heart of Ouarzazate, Taourirt Kasbah stands as a majestic testament to Morocco’s rich history and architectural brilliance. Once the residence of the powerful Glaoui family, this fortified palace is a masterpiece of Berber craftsmanship, offering visitors a glimpse into the grandeur of Morocco’s past.
Uncover the Rich History of Taourirt Kasbah
Taourirt Kasbah was first built in the 17th century by the Imzwarn, a powerful local family. More certainly, however, the kasbah was taken over and expanded by the Glaoui family in the 19th century, transforming it into a lavish palace and strategic stronghold controlling the southern caravan routes.
At its peak, the kasbah controlled an important location at the confluence of several river valleys, including the Draa and Dadès, which were vital trade routes.
In 1954, it was added to the Moroccan National Heritage List, and in 1972, the Municipality of Ouarzazate acquired the site. Restoration efforts, supported by UNESCO, began in the late 1980s, preserving parts of the kasbah for visitors.
