Childeren

Kids:

Our main role is helping children, parents, women, men whom are effected by poverty or natural disasters. In places where there is a high rate of child abandonment, we also run programmes to help strengthen vulnerable families and keep them together.

Women

Women:

Our aims are to:
Empower women who have been affected by domestic violence
Meet the needs of children affected by domestic violence
Provide services run by women which are based on listening to survivors
Challenge the disadvantages which result from domestic violence
Support and reflect diversity and promote equality of opportunity
Promote cohesive inter-agency responses to domestic violence and develop partnerships.

The Aged

We help to fight to free disadvantaged older people from poverty, isolation and neglect and illness. Understanding the needs of older people is fundamental to this work and we are committed to supporting and promoting high-quality research.

Urban poverty

Urban poverty:

More people live in cities than rural areas, making urban poverty one of the most important issues of the 21st century. One billion people live in dire city slums and the situation is getting worse. Our work focuses not only on the symptoms, but on tackling the causes of urban poverty.half the world’s population lives in cities.

Community organisation

Community organisation:

Fighting for your rights is a tall order on your own. But for the world’s poor, fighting for their basic rights is an enormous challenge. Alone, they have no voice. We help people build a shared voice through community organisation.

Microfinance and markets

Microfinance and markets:

Millions of the world’s poorest do not have access to basic financial services, like insurance, loans and interest-earning savings. We help poor communities earn a decent living by providing basic financial services and developing and opening new markets for them to sell their products in.

Business partnerships

Business partnerships:

We view it that new solutions are needed to the complex problems that face the world today, such as rapid urbanisation and poverty, and that business has to be part of the solution. By harnessing the core skills and technical expertise of big business, We believe we can begin to find lasting, sustainable solutions.

Education

Education:

Too many of the world's poorest children are missing out on an education. We help more than 1.4 million children get a good education. Nearly 70,000 children are in schools directly supported by us. And in 2005, we trained more than 3,000 teachers.

Food and farming

Food and farming:

Millions of people die from hunger and malnutrition every year all around the world. But all of these deaths could be prevented. We give food aid in emergencies, but we also work hard to tackle the deeper causes of malnutrition and starvation.

Water and sanitation

Water and sanitation:

Clean water: without it, people die. More than one billion people in the world do not have clean water to drink. Two billion do not have adequate sanitation, like toilets. We are improving water supplies, sanitation, domestic hygiene and stopping the spread of water-related diseases in poor communities.

Health

Health:

Poor health and poverty go hand-in-hand. When you are sick or caring for someone who is ill you can’t build a future for yourself, your family or your community. We aim to fights poverty by improving the health of millions of the world’s poorest people, including 7 million children last year.

Emergencies

Emergencies:

Fighting poverty is never more difficult than in times of crisis. We are always among the first to respond when disaster strikes. We make sure aid gets where it is needed most. But our emergency response is only the beginning. We help rebuild lives long after the TV cameras have gone.

AIM: Our mission is to create lasting change in poor communities and we put money where it is needed most: every pound goes towards our poverty fighting programmes. The Funds are directly passed on to the ground level where it is needed and hands-on experience, our programmes tackle the deep-seated root causes of poverty, not just the consequences. Just two examples of the way we do this are helping farmers to grow their own food and helping people start small businesses, build homes for the orphans, hospital, schools, water treatments, sewages etc.

Changing people’s lives also means changing the world around them – so we work in partnership with businesses and governments to help them do their bit to confront poverty too. It’s an approach that has a much more sustainable impact than superficial quick fixes will ever do.

We believe passionately in the dignity of all people and make a long-term commitment to stay with the communities we work with until the job gets done. That’s because we deal with challenging and complex issues - such as Health and Educational – that do not have quick-fix solutions. We know the sticking plaster approach to aid does not work.
